New
Miniature Advanced Performance Time-of-Flight
Detector for Field Portable Instrumentation
STURBRIDGE,
MA – November 2, 1999 – BURLE ELECTRO-OPTICS, INC. has developed
an ultra-small microchannel plate (MCP) based Time-of-Flight detector
(TOF) which provides high dynamic range and excellent temporal
resolution in a 0.62 inch diameter package with an 8 mm active
area. This detector can be installed in a field portable,
“laptop” size, Time-of-Flight mass spectrometer and was specially
developed to improve the overall performance of the instrument.
Microchannel
plates are compact, solid state electron multipliers that are
sensitive to a large variety of charged particles and electromagnetic
radiation. This Advanced Performance Detector uses two Long-Life™
small pore Extended Dynamic Range (EDR) microchannel plates arranged
in a Chevron™ configuration. These MCPs, with pores of only
5 microns in diameter, offer the highest channel density available.
This channel density provides dynamic range improvements of 10
times over conventional microchannel plates.
The
detector design allows the microchannel plates to be mounted on
a 1 ⅓” mini conflat flange while coupled to a conical anode.
This feature allows superior temporal performance while maintaining
an ultra-small footprint. The planar surface of the MCPs
contributes to the high sensitivity of the detector.
The
detector is installed at the end of the linear flight path and
can be operated in positive or negative ion modes. Time-of-Flight
mass resolution is related to the overall flight path of the ion.
When reducing the flight path for size limitation, mass resolution
degrades. Using this detector has improved the overall performance
of the portable mass spectrometer.
The
continued miniaturization of Time-of-Flight Mass Spectrometers
has prompted demand for smaller size detectors. Scaling
larger mass spectrometers down adds new challenges for detector
design to keep performance at a high level. Detectors like
this one are a critical component, making compact instrumentation
viable in today’s market.
BURLE
ELECTRO-OPTICS, INC., headquartered in Sturbridge, Massachusetts,
in the world’s largest manufacturer of single and multi-channel
mass spectrometer detectors. A pioneer in developing scientific
detector products, the company is recognized as the worldwide
leader in electron multiplication technology for its Channeltron

New
Compact Microchannel Plate Based Detectors for High Performance
Sensors and
Instrumentation
STURBRIDGE,
MA – NOVEMBER 8, 1999 – BURLE ELECTRO-OPTICS, INC. announces a
line of compact Long-Life™ Microchannel Plate (MCP) based detectors
that improve the sensitivity performance of field portable mass
spectrometers and portable leak detection systems. These
detectors provide high gain ion detection (>10 million) within
a small detector package (as small as 0.56” dia. X 0.23” height).
In addition, they have been shown to perform well at operating
pressures greater that 1 x 10¯³ Torr. These new low outgassing
detectors can be vacuum baked to 380°C and can be operated in
either pulse counting or analog modes and provide linear output
current exceeding 1 microamp.
MCPs
are compact, solid state electron multipliers that consist of
a two dimensional array of literally millions of miniature (less
than 10 microns in diameter) single channel electron multipliers
that consist of a two-dimensional array of literally millions
of miniature (less than 10 microns in diameter) single channel
electron multipliers. Typical microchannel plate thicknesses
are 0.3mm and when utilized in Chevron™ (two plate set) or Z-Stack
(3 plate stack) configurations, MCPs are capable of matching the
performance of most electron multipliers while only occupying
on tenth (1/10) of the vacuum real estate.
The
use of MCPs as detectors in field portable mass spectrometers
and portable leak detection systems is a logical step in the quest
for smaller and lighter instrumentation. The widespread
commercialization of remote leak detection is also demanding increased
in sensitivity for systems which are dependent on faraday plate
detectors alone.

BURLE
Announces the World's First 2-Micron Pore Microchannel Plate
Lancaster,
PA - February 8, 2001 - BURLE announces the development and availability
of its ultra-small pore Microchannel Plate. The 2-micron pore
MCP technology offers dramatic performance improvements in instrument
sensitivity, mass resolution, temporal response and dynamic range
for applications such as night vision devices and Time-of-flight
Mass Spectrometry (TOF-MS). Previously, the smallest MCP available
on the market was BURLE's 5-micron pore Microchannel Plate.
This
remarkable technological development in MCP manufacturing is expected
to spur rapid advancements in both miniaturization and cost reduction
of TOF instrument systems and detection devices. The small pore
size improves temporal response enabling instrument manufacturers
to shorten the flight path required to separate ions by mass.
This leads to a smaller and simpler vacuum system that directly
translates to lower cost instruments with higher performance.
Night vision device manufacturers can expect to almost double
resolution of their image intensifiers by the increased spatial
resolution of up to 150 lp/mm offered by the BURLE'S 2-micron

Revolutionary
Approach Developed for Electron Impact Ionization for MS Applications
BURLE
Electro-Optics, Inc. announces a revolutionary product that is
expected to change the way mass spectrometry instruments generate
gas-phase ions for their mass filters and many other applications.
BURLE’s new Electron Generator Array™ (EGA) replaces
filament-based electron sources that offer no warm-up time or
stabilization period requirement, greater control over the electron
beam’s shape and a highly uniform flux density up to 1.0
x 10-10 A/cm2.
Until now, use of conventional filament sources for producing
electrons was the long-established standard. One problem with
filaments is that they often cause pyrolytic effects, which chemically
change the unknown substance to be identified.
BURLE's patented
Electron Generator Arrays™ (EGAs), solve the problem by
producing a cold electron source that offers a rock solid electron
flux without the heat and “photon noise” typically
generated from filament ionization sources.
BURLE EGAs
exceptionally low heat output is a direct result of lowering power
consumption. A BURLE EGA producing a 50uA flux evenly distributed
over a 50mm x 8mm area, and consumes less than a half a watt.
Virtually all the current is used to produce the electron flux
with no heating of the EGA.
The BURLE
EGA consist of millions of precision glass tubes (pores) all fused
together to produce a uniform and mechanically rigid structure.
When voltage is applied across it's thickness, each pore produces
a beam of highly uniform and extremely dense electrons. The result
is an electron beam that is more uniform over a wider area than
conventional filament sources.
Applications
for BURLE EGAs include Electron Impact Ionization sources in Mass
Spectroscopy, Fluorescent display screens, electron scrub sources,
sample discharge for SEMs and more.
BURLE Electron
Generator Arrays™ can be manufactured in any shape offering
a beam shape customized to meet any application requirement. EGAs
are available in an easy to use assembly consisting of a 40mm
active area EGA Chevron™ mounted in stainless steel hardware
with mounting holes and electrical connection terminals. Custom
shapes, sizes and configurations are also available.
